The enlargement of the canal will require lots of steel, and the Port of Fernandina experienced a sizzling rate of growth in steel exports in 2009.
Bolstered by shipments to the Caribbean and South America, the port handled 240,000 tons of steel exports in 2009 compared to 80,000 tons in 2008.

A four-lane road that would connect Youngerman Circle to Collins Road may end up being partially built by a private developer.
Under a plan going to the Jacksonville City Council today, developer Thomas Dumas would help build Parramore Road - currently a two-lane dirt road - and then build two shopping centers nearby.
The plan concerns the Council Auditor's Office, which objects to Dumas only building a portion of the roadway, for $4.7 million. The rest, which would connect to Youngerman Circle and is expected to cost $2.1 million, is unfunded.

As many as 525 jobs could be headed to Jacksonville as a result of Lender Processing Services expanding its Jacksonville headquarters and Digital Risk LLC of Orlando opening a new operation center in Jacksonville.
Both companies are tying their decisions to requests for state and city financial incentives. The Jacksonville Economic Development Commission will consider the measures at its meeting Wednesday.
LPS and Digital Risk provide services in the residential mortgage industry.
