Hurricanes.

Tropical storms and hurricanes are unfortunately a part of life in Florida. The official hurricane season starts June 1 and ends November 30. In the past, most hurricane activity has fallen on the period between August 15 and September 30, although people should be ready for this and other types of natural disasters around the year. Being prepared can make a huge difference.

Some say insurance companies delay payments and slow investigations. But some homeowners don't know they can reopen claims when damage reappears.

Mary McClenehan cast a wary eye on a once pretty pink house. Behind it, a dry, in-ground pool was filled with a large grill, love seat and children's toys. If a hurricane comes, she fears the debris could go airborne.


Sure, we could have sold our house for a gazillion dollars before the hurricanes hit in 2004. But we didn't. Even Frances, Jeanne and Wilma didn't scare us away.
